I must have temporarily lost the plot, because I appear to have signed up for a marathon…

I am envious of Mr.Potato Head…

Wish me luck with Marathon. Managed 2 hrs, 35 mins last year & then I just had to watch something else – From Twitter @thekeithchegwin Proper made me chuckle!

So yesterday the London Marathon took place (in London, duh) and apart from being well and truly in awe of the people who took part and completed it, there were a few things that really caught my attention.

1. The winner (of the men’s race) completed the course in just over two hours. TWO HOURS! He was running 13mph. My car doesn’t even get to that speed when I’m in traffic on my morning commute. Seriously can’t fathom this running speed. Amazing.

2. There were an enormous amount of World Records set during the race, including the most Rubik’s cubes solved in a marathon¬† – it was 100 by the way in 4 hours and 45 minutes. I don’t think I will finish my marathon in that time without the cubes! – and Fastest Marathon dressed as Mr. Potato Head to name a few of my favourites. You can see the full list of records set at this page and it is well worth a quick scan for a good giggle.

3. I really want to do it. I didn’t realise it before but I really would love to do it properly. I am really excited to do the Liverpool Marathon in October and with my over-reactive skin it will certainly be easier for me running in the Winter. However, I really want to do the London one next year. I know it is very difficult to gain entry for it, but I’ve decided it’s definitely a goal that I want to work towards. One heavy step at a time…

I know that many switch off when the marathon comes around in the year, and to an extent I am one of them. But, the more I’m running and reading about running, the more I am reminded of when I was a teenager, when I didn’t catch out of breathe, when I could run for as long as I wanted without breaking a sweat, and when I actually enjoyed running and looked forward to one day being in the Olympics (a dream of mine when I was a young child).
Those dreams may be gone now, but televised events such as these should really get people moving again. I doubt it does, which is sad.
But oh well, at least Mr.Potato Head is doing his bit.

Definitely a contender for best marathon fancy dress idea EVER
